Clinical Vignette

The patient is an adult female with a history of hemoglobin SC disease. She was seen both as an inpatient and outpatient over the following month and received another red cell exchange with group A, Rh negative RBCs. She continued to have headache, pain in her legs and back, insomnia, nausea and vomiting.

Hematology Lab results:

  • Hemoglobin: 10.5 g/dl

  • Hematocrit: 31.3%

  • Retic count: 5.1%

  • Haptoglobin <6mg/dl


Transfusion Medicine Lab results:

  • ABO/Rh type: AB Neg (mixed field with anti-B)

  • Antibody Screen: Positive
